About Emily Jones Queen

Emily Jones Queen is a seventh-generation native of Wilmington and a second-generation attorney. She is a graduate of John T. Hoggard High School and she received her undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude from North Carolina State University. Emily graduated early from law school, with honors, receiving her Juris Doctor, Cum Laude.

During law school, Emily interned for the District Attorney’s Office in New Hanover and Pender Counties, where she started building working relationships with some of our current Assistant District Attorneys and some of our judges. Emily also gained experience working with United Family Services, Victim’s Assistance, where she represented victims of domestic violence.

Upon passing the Bar, Emily joined Burney & Jones, where she has remained for the entirety of her career. Emily became a partner of the firm in 2016 and took over the firm at the beginning of 2019.

Emily practices primarily in the areas of Criminal, Juvenile, and Family Law. Emily has dedicated her career to ensuring that her clients are treated with respect and that they have an understanding of their legal rights. Emily works tirelessly to help her clients navigate the judicial system and to provide zealous advocacy for each case.

Emily is a member of the North Carolina State Bar. She has also been involved with and held several leadership positions in Coastal Women’s Attorneys and the New Hanover and Pender County Bars.

Throughout her career, Emily has been nominated for and received several awards, most notably: Super Lawyer’s Rising Star, Business North Carolina Magazine’s Legal Elite Young Gun and Criminal Law, Expertise Top 15 Best Criminal Defense Attorney in Wilmington, and Pro Bono Publico from Legal Aid of North Carolina. In 2018 she was the distinguished recipient of the Addison Hewlett Award for her legal service to this community.

Emily has also volunteered and assisted with programs such as Teen Court, Mock Trial Competitions in the capacity of a judge, an attorney mentor, and an assistant Mock Trial coach. She has volunteered with the Lawyers for Literacy Program and with other local nonprofit organizations.

About Izzy Ettwein

Legal Assistant

Izzy moved to Wilmington in 2020 from her hometown of Asheville, NC and since has made Wilmington her home. A student at Cape Fear majoring in American Sign Language interpreting, Izzy immensely enjoys working with Emily and all of her clients. Izzy finds great joy in being able to alleviate some of the overwhelming anxiety most feel when engaging an attorney. She will typically be the first voice you hear from Burney & Jones, and strives to provide understanding, compassion, and information for any who call.
