About Burney & Jones

Practicing in the courts of New Hanover County since 1926.

Our Story

Nearly a century in the making, our firm has practiced in the courts of New Hanover County since 1926. Over that time, we’ve proven ourselves, case by case, gaining a hard-earned reputation as one of the area’s most effective and compassionate advocates. Through the years, we’ve built strong relationships throughout the New Hanover County and Pender County communities and beyond—relationships that could be key to getting the best possible outcome for your case.

Brothers John J. Burney, Jr. and Louie Burney practiced in the courtrooms in New Hanover County for over __ years. Their father, John J. Burney was a Superior Court Judge. John J. Burney, Jr., was a North Carolina senator from 1967 until 1972. You may also recognize the Burney name if you’ve driven on the John Jay Burney Jr. Freeway or visited the UNCW Burney Center.

On the Jones side, seventh generation Wilmington local, and second-generation lawyer, Emily Jones Queen, took over the firm in 2019, after practicing alongside her father for five years. Emily has spent most of her life in and around the legal field and has a mission of continuing the legacy of Burney & Jones. She aims to further the positive reputation held in the courthouses and the communities of New Hanover and Pender Counties.
